IBORI: FINALLY, UPU BREAKS SILENCE

The Urhobo Progress Union (UPU), the umbrella body of the entire Urhobo nation has finally commented on the release of former Delta State Governor, Chief James Ibori.

Our Correspondent reports that the UPU which is apparently the foremost proponent of the Urhobo nation remained silent on the issue for over 24 hours despite the soaring ecstasy and joy that rocked the entire length and breadth of the oil rich state.

This was however against a prompt comment which the National Publicity Secretary of the Union,  Chief Duncan Ewhere issued on his personal capacity on Wednesday, December 21.

In the official statement of the UPU released on Thursday, December 22, the group expressed confidence that the regained freedom of former Delta State Governor, Chief James Ibori will orchestrate a total liberation of the oil rich Niger Delta region.

The UPU said it has strong reasons to roll out the drums in celebration of Ibori’s release from a United Kingdom prison, observing that the erstwhile Governor was persecuted because of his undying belief in the Niger Delta struggle of which resource control was pivotal.

This was contained in a statement that was jointly signed by the President-General of the union, Chief Joe Omene and its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Duncan Ewhere.

“We are in total conviction that your persecution was as a result of your firm belief for the cause of the Niger Delta over which, you championed the agenda for Resource Control of the mineral resources derived from the area”, the statement said.

The UPU which maintained that there is no road too long to have an end, disclosed that it strongly feels that Ibori’s travail and persecution through the British Government has come to an end.

“We therefore roll out our drums too in celebration of your freedom, which of course, translates to mean freedom not only to the average Urhobo person, but to the entire Niger Delta region. Congratulations. Odidigboigbo of Africa”, the statement added.
